Background

Scope and content:

Scrapbooks of newspaper clippings providing a chronological view of VMI activities, events. Categories include general topics; sports, and special topics. From the 1950's forward these were compiled by the Public Relations staff; prior to that date they originated with various other employees, including the Librarian Nellie Gibbs. The Gibbs sometimes contain photographs pasted to pages.

General VMI Topics: 1845-1981; Sports/Athletics, 1920-1972; Special Topics: Hazing death of Thurber Sweet, 1915; firing of Professor Robert Kerlin, 1921; VMI Centennial, 1939; Glee Club, 1966-1967; Marshall Library Dedication, 1964.

A series of chronological scrapbooks primarily compiled by Nellie Tracy Gibbs, containing newspapers clippings and some photographs about VMI events, people, and activities.

After Gibbs' retirement the volumes were continued by someone else until 1949.

A collection of oversized scrapbooks, chronological, containing newspaper clippings about various VMI related topics including special events and cadet life.

Oversized Scrapbooks, chronological, containing newspaper clippings about VMI athletic activities, including football, baseball and other sports teams. These were compiled by the Public Information Office (now Communications and Marketing).

One volume scrapbook containing clippings about two unrelated topics- the hazing death of Cadet Thurber Sweet in 1915; and the dismissal of Professor Robert Kerlin from his faculty position in 1921.

One volume scrapbook containing newspaper clippings about the celebration of VMI's 100th anniversary, November 1939, and other events from the centennial year.

One volume scrapbook containing newspaper clippings about the dedication of the George C. Marshall Research Library on May 24, 1964. The keynote speaker was President Lyndon Johnson

One volume scrapbook containing Glee Club programs and photographs for the period 1966-1967. Allen G. Biester was the Director.

Biographical / historical:

These scrapbooks were created by VMI offices. They are distinct from cadet compiled personal scrapbooks.

Nellie Tracy Gibbs served at VMI's Head Librarian from 1908-1931. She died in 1948.
