The collection consists of the matriculation record for incoming VMI classes. Nineteenth century books contain home address, parent or guardian name, age, and other information in addition to the signature.
Contemporary copy through 1860. Original signatures 1861-1888.
Bound volumes containing the signatures of returning cadets (old cadets); they signed in at the beginning of the school year. This practice began in 1925 and was discontinued in 1986.

Since the earliest days of the Institute, entering cadets have signed a matriculation book when they arrive at VMI.

The most recent volume is located in the Office of the Registrar. When the volume is filled, it is transferred to the VMI Archives for permanent retention.
