This collection consists of one letter (dated May 1, 1856) from VMI's Superintendent Francis H. Smith to the mother of Cadet John J. Smith. The letter discusses Cadet Smith's religious awakening.
- Biographical / historical:

John Jacquelin Smith was born in 1837 in Alexandria, Virginia. He graduated VMI in 1857. During the Civil War he was a Staff Officer with the Confederate States of America. After the War he was a businessman in New York City, New York. Smith died in 1895 in Morristown, New Jersey.
