Background

Scope and content:

The VMI historical appointment documents collection consists of notices of appointment sent to new cadets at VMI. The documents date from the 1840s into the 1900s. These are typically pre-printed forms on which the name, date, and other details are filled in by hand. They also include a list of supplies needed and information about expenses.

Letter appointing Richard Pollard a cadet at VMI. Signed by Board of Visitors member Charles P. Dorman. Note to Pollard's father written by Superintendent Francis H. Smith is at the bottom.

Letter appointing Russell Pancake a cadet at VMI. He did not enroll. Signed by William B. Taliaferro, VMI Board of Visitors.

Letter appointing Samuel John Foushe Tebbs as a cadet at VMI. He was a member of the Class of 1865.
