Evergreen House was originally built in 1816 for Yardley Taylor (1794-1868), one of the first professional nurserymen in the country, maker of the Yardley Taylor Map of Loudoun County, Virginia 1853, and county surveyor. It is located 1/2 mile south of Lincoln, Virginia. In an advertisement for sale, 1887, it was described as a large stone and frame structure, substantially built, containing eighteen rooms and good cellar.
For many years (1895 to 1930's), it was the home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hoge. Mr. Hoge was a Friends (Quaker) Minister and an officer of the National Prohibition Organization. Mrs. Hoge was president of the Virginia WCTU and an officer in the National Prohibition Organization.
In 1956 it became the home of Catherine Marshall (1915-1983) and her parents, the Reverend John A. Wood and Leonora Whitaker Wood. Mrs. Marshall, the widow of Peter Marshall, chaplain of the U.S. Senate, is best noted for her many books about the life of her husband. In 1959 she married Leonard LeSourd, an editor.
