Background

Scope and content:

The collection primarily comprises ledgers, account books, and financial records kept by Charles F. Hulvey of Cross Keys. The records chiefly document Hulvey's work as a blacksmith and farmer and include ledgers, tax returns, banking statements, canceled checks, and invoices. Records documenting Daniel Garber's estate are also included. Hulvey was Garber's son-in-law and administrator of his estate.

The ledgers document blacksmithing work performed by Hulvey for customers. Work included various blacksmithing tasks such as making and removing horseshoes, sharpening harrow teeth and other assorted farm implements, making bolts, general repairs and mendings, fashioning various handles, and more. Local surnames present in the ledgers include Arey, Argabright, Bazzle, Begoon, Coffman, Diehl, Evans, Evers, Hartman, Hinkle (Hinkel), Lineweaver, Long Bros., Menifee, Meyerheoffer, Pence, Ruebush, Saufley, Shank, Showalter, Trobaugh, Whitesel, etc.

One account book tracks farming income and expenses.

Additional materials include correspondence, blank cards, a home remedy recipe for dropsy, and a manual of information for Rife Hydraulic Water Rams (manufactured in Waynesboro, Virginia).

Biographical / historical:

Charles F. Hulvey (1872-1847) was a lifelong resident of Rockingham County, specifically the Cross Keys section. He was a blacksmith, farmer, and railroad worker with Chesapeake Western Railway. Hulvey's father Isaac F. Hulvey (1849-1895) was also a blacksmith. The 1888-1892 blacksmith ledger in this collection likely documents Isaac's work. In 1897, Charles F. Hulvey married Fannie Laura Garber (1874-1920) with whom he had two children, Raymond and Mabel.
