Biographical / historical:

"Broadside" - George Mason University's (GMU) official student newspaper - began as "The Gunston Ledger" in the Fall of 1963, when GMU was still George Mason College (GMC). The newspaper's initial purpose was to inform GMC's student body of events and happenings on campus. By the late 1960s, the newspaper had grown into a more political and outspoken publication, particularly during the Vietnam War. The Ledger was renamed "Broadside" in October 1969, its journalists stating, "that the old name 'no longer represents the things which we want it to stand for'" (Student Unrest at Mason.) Broadside kept its name until 2013 when it joined with the student-run news website "Connect2Mason" and was renamed again, this time as the "Fourth Estate." Fourth Estate is an online-only publication, though it does publish physical supplemental editions.
