Scope and content:

The beanie in this collection, which dates to ca. 1946, was worn by Norma Lou Roady while a freshman at State Teachers College.

Biographical / historical:

Norma Lou Roady of Newport News, Virginia was born in 1927 to William C. and Arta E. Roady. She attended State Teachers College and Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia from 1946 to 1950, graduating with a bachelor's degree in physical education. After graduation, Roady earned her Master's degree in Education from University of Virginia. She taught for 12 years in the Danville, Virginia school system. Roady then spent 30 years teaching physical education at Averett University where she also coached field hockey and basketball and later served as Department Chair.

Custodial history:

This freshman "rat cap" beanie, which belonged to Norma Lou Roady while a student at State Teachers College, was subsequently acquired by Nancy Shelton during her tenure with Longwood University's Department of Alumni Relations. It is unknown when this collection was transferred to the Greenwood Library Archives.
