Background

Scope and content:

The Fairfax County, Virginia Gravestones Collections consists of 0.5 linear feet and spans the years 1990-1993 and contains meeting minutes, correspondence, notes, and an early first draft of Volume 1 of the Fairfax Genealogical Society’s six-volume cemetery survey. The meeting minutes are from the society’s Cemetery Projects Publications Committee; correspondence is from Diane Davis (the final editor of Volume 1); and a bound early draft of Volume 1 when Freida E. Robey was the initial editor. The early draft of Volume 1 is completely different from the final published book.

Biographical / historical:

Between 1973 and 1977, Jane K. Wall surveyed 96 church and family cemeteries in Fairfax County, Virginia. In the mid-1980s, the Fairfax Genealogical Society sought to update Wall’s survey by resurveying cemeteries, correcting errors, and adding cemeteries previously not recorded. The society recruited its members to walk through cemeteries and transcribe gravestones. They also assigned a Cemetery Project Publications Committee to publish a complete and updated survey. In order to ensure accuracy, the society compared and merged all of the data from Jane K. Wall’s cemetery survey, cemetery files from Fairfax County Public Library’s Virginia Room, and additional resurveying that they had undertaken. The result was a six volume set of books published between 1994 through 1999 entitled Fairfax County, Virginia Gravestones which contained transcriptions for over 330 burial locations.
