Biographical / historical:

Norma Merrick Sklarek was born in New York, NY, in 1928. Sklarek was a graduate of Barnard College and the School of Architecture at Columbia University. Sklarek was the first African-American woman to become a licensed architect in both New York (1954) and California (1962), and a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. She became a principal of the Jerde Partnership in Los Angeles, and director of the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
