Background

Scope and content:

The Janet Johnson Collection consists of letters, biographies, personnel and retiree materials, newspaper articles, newsletters, and photographs from 1948 to 2022. These materials relate to home economics, human nutrition and food science, and the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office services at Virginia Tech and throughout the state.

Biographical / historical:

Janet Johnson is the Dean Emerita and a Professor Emerita in the College of Human Resources and Education, now part of the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. She served as a Professor of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise from 1976 to 1996. Johnson was later appointed as the Dean of the College of Human Resources and Education from 1996 to her retirement in 2002. She earned her B.S. in Home Economics Education from Purdue University (1963) and taught high school home economics before attending graduate school at Cornell University. She would then earn her masters (1970) and doctoral degrees in Foods and Nutrition (1972). Dr. Johnson has been an active member of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences since 1963. She is currently involved with the Nutrition, Health, and Food Management Division's Ethics Committee, and she is recognized as an AAFCS Leader. Janet Johnson contributed her leadership, scholarship, and research to Virginia Tech as a faculty member in the Department of Human Nutrition and Foods and as a Cooperative Extension specialist. Her research and scholarship focuses on human nutrition and food quality issues, which can be found in over 50 journal articles, book chapters, abstracts, and exclusive presentations. Janet Johnson also earned the following professional recognition awards: Purdue University Distinguished Alumni Award, the Phi Delta Kappa Outstanding Educator Award, the Alfred Payne Omicron Delta Kappa Student Service Award; the Excellence in Teaching Award from Virginia Tech, the Borden Award for Outstanding Foods Research, the AAFCS Distinguished Service Award, and the "Hall of Fame Award" from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 2015. She retired from Virginia Tech in 2002 after 26 years of service. Janet Johnson currently serves on the Roanoke Symphony Board and Rotary International. She is also an active board member of Virginians for the Arts and Cooperative Extension volunteer.
