- Biographical / historical:
-
The Women in Architecture Committee (WIA) was established as a committee of the AIA New York Chapter to promote the visibility, advancement, and professional development of women architects. Throughout the 1990s, the committee organized educational programs, lectures, exhibitions, networking events, and advocacy initiatives while working with AIA New York Chapter and AIA New York State leadership to address issues affecting women in the architectural profession. Committee activities emphasized leadership development, public engagement, professional recognition, mentoring, and expanding opportunities for women in architecture.
In addition to its programming, the committee collaborated with numerous professional organizations, government agencies, educational institutions, and architectural firms. Major initiatives documented in these records include the Women Patrons program, Project Punch List, Connections: A Forum for Work by Women, Projections: A Celebration of Work by Women, the Lecture and Conversation Series, and numerous committee, legislative, and public policy efforts. These activities reflect the committee's role in promoting gender equity within the profession while documenting the broader activities of AIA New York Chapter and AIA New York State during the 1990s.
