Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains a six page handwritten letter from a Union Officer. It was written by Captin Ezra S. Farnsworth in Petersburg, Virginia, on December 30, 1864. The letter is addressed to Col. Francis J. Parker, in response to a letter from Parker, and was sent after a "raid" at the camp in Petersburg.

Biographical / historical:

Ezra S. Farnsworth was born around 1830, and enlisted in the Union army July of 1862 in Massachusetts. He was a sergeant in the 32nd infantry. In 1863 while in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, he was wounded in battle. On April 9, 1865, his rank was promoted to major, then on May 30, 1865, he left the army.
