The Virginia Winery Cooperative was incorporated sometime before August 17, 1985. The cooperative was established to provide members with a guaranteed market for their wine grapes and share profits among independent vineyard owners. The cooperative purchased land in Culpeper, Virginia in 1985 to build its winery. The winery had an initial capacity to process grapes from 65 acres of vines. The wine produced by the winery in Culpeper was distributed under the Dominion Wine Cellars label. In 1990, the cooperative was sold to Williamsburg Winery which took over operation of the Culpeper facility and its Dominion Wine Cellars label and agreed to purchase grapes from the cooperative's members.
