Background
- Scope and content:
-
This collection contains a handwritten 1958 letter from Mary and Virginia Crockett to Goodrick Wilson [possibly Goodridge Alexander Wilson, Jr., historian and writer for the Roanoke Times] regarding the historic St. Peter's Parish Church in New Kent, Virginia. The letter discusses the families involved in the church as well as the bells that would sound to call the parishioners to worship.
- Biographical / historical:
-
St. Peter's Parish Church in New Kent (1679-present) is one of the oldest parish church in Virginia. Some of the original structure of the church still stands as of 2021, even though it has been through the fighting of the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) and the American Civil War (1861-1865). It was designated the "The First Church of the First Lady" due to Martha Washington's connection to it and was restored to its colonial appearance in 1964.
