This collection contains roster information of steam powered locomotives used by Norfolk & Western Railway written by Arthur S. Bixby, Sr. in 1978. The roster gives a brief overview of the history of Norfolk & Western Railroad and Norfolk & Western Railway. The steam locomotive information begins in 1881 and continues to 1961 with the phasing out of steam driven locomotives. Collection contains a letter from the author explaining the abbreviations used throughout the roster.

Norfolk & Western Railway Steam Locomotive Roster, September 1, 1978, contains one bound roster of steam locomotive used by Norfolk & Western Railroad and Norfolk & Western Railway from 1881 through 1961. The roster lists information about the locomotive engines and their final dispositions. The roster also contains a copy of a letter from the author explaining some of the abbreviations used within the roster.

Biographical / historical:

Norfolk & Western Railway started in 1881 and operated until 1997 when it merged with Southern Railway to become Norfolk Southern Railway. Norfolk & Western was headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia.

Norfolk Western Railway Steam Locomotive Roster was donated to Special Collections in 1986.
