Biographical / historical:

Agriculture classes have been offered at Virginia Tech since its first days as a university in the 1872. When the first major administrative divisions of the university emerged just after the turn of the century, the Department of Agriculture was among them, with the first dean being appointed in 1903. In 1921, division became known as the School of Agriculture; in 1964, the College of Agriculture; and in 1971, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). Today, it includes more than a dozen academic departments. CALS remains closely connected to the Virginia Agricultural Experience Station (established in 1886) and the Virginia Cooperative Extension, established in 1914.
