- Biographical / historical:

Dr. John Mettauer "Taw" Williams was born at Union Hall, Virginia on February 20, 1851. He was educated at Roanoke College and studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1874. Following in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Benjamin Williams, Dr. J.M. Williams practiced medicine in Franklin County for 53 years and in Roanoke for ten years. Dr. J.M. Williams married his first wife, Loulie Scott of Rocky Mount in December 1874. After her death in 1918, he married Bessie Tompkins of Salem. Dr. J.M. Williams died December 24, 1936. He was buried with his first wife in Rocky Mount, Virginia.
