Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains a color sketch of Private James Maloney, a soldier in the 116th New York Infantry Regiment of the United States Army during the American Civil War. The sketch says "James Malony / Col. George M. Loves orderlie" under the drawing and "James Malony, Col. Loves Orderly" on the other side of the paper.

Biographical / historical:

James S. Maloney (also Malony) was born about 1841 in Buffalo, New York, and worked as a bookkeeper. During the American Civil War, he enlisted on August 30, 1862, in Company H of the 116th New York Infantry Regiment of the United States Army. He was wounded in action on May 27, 1863, at Port Hudson, Louisiana, and mustered out on June 8, 1865, with the company at Washington, D. C. The sketch in this collection indicates that Maloney may have been Col. George M. Love's orderly. Love (1831-1887) was the commanding officer of the 116th New York Infantry, first as Colonel then Brevet Brigadier General.
