This letter was written by Robert Walton to his sister Elizabeth McClanahan. In this letter, Walton describes his travels from Abingdon, Virginia, to Augusta, Georgia–his place of residence. He tells his sister of his possible trip to New York in the coming summer, during which he will attempt to stop in Botetourt, Virginia–the area in which his sister lives. In this letter, Walton also makes reference to his intention to marry "E." this is most likely a reference to his marriage soon after to Evalina Sarah Watkins.

The author of the letter is most likely Robert Walton, Jr, of Augusta, Georgia. Walton was born to Robert and Blanche (Glascock) Walton on February 1, 1791. He married Evalina Sarah Watkins. Their children were: Elizabeth (1814-1835), Hon. Anderson Watkins (1817-1885), Blanche (July 26-August 3, 1819), Mary Louisa (1820-1903), William Augustus (1822-1882), Leonidas Watkins (1825-1900), Robert (1826-1905), Dr. Claiborne Russell (1829-1857), Evalina Sally Hamilton (1832-1843), and Catherine Elizabeth (1835-1898). Robert Walton, Jr. died in early 1870. He and his wife are buried in the Morris Street Cemetery in Augusta, Georgia.
