The IAWA Small Collections was compiled from a variety of sources by Special Collections staff for use in reference and research. The collection consists primarily of biographical materials for women architects, architectural historians, and designers including curriculum vitas, firm brochures, exhibit notices, photographs, and publications. Drawings, sketches, course notes, correspondence, and other materials pertaining to architectural collections are also present.

Biographical / historical:

The International Archive of Women in Architecture (IAWA), established in 1985, is a joint program of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies and the University Libraries at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The purpose of the Archive is to document the history of women's involvement in architecture by collecting, preserving, storing, and making available to researchers the professional papers of women architects, landscape architects, designers, architectural historians and critics, urban planners, and the records of women's architectural organizations.

Acquisition information:
The IAWA Small Collections is an artificial collection compiled by Special Collections in 2009.
Processing information:

The processing, arrangement and description of the IAWA Small Collections commenced in July, 2009 and was completed in September, 2009. The bulk of the material came from the IAWA One Folder Collections and other small, mostly biographical collections deemed by Special Collections staff to be more accessible in the artificial collection format. The original accession and manuscript numbers were retained and are enclosed in brackets on the individual folders.

Arrangement:

The collection is arranged alphabetically into three series Persons and Associations, Publications, and Subject Files.
