Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of a single broadside entitled "Instructions for Using John W. Barnett's Patent Process for Curing Leaf Tobacco." The broadside identifies Barnett as a resident of Big Spring (Montomgery County, Virginia) and notes that the process had been patented on January 7, 1879.

Biographical / historical:

John W. Barnett, patent holder for this tobacco-curing process, seem likely to have been John William Barnett, born in Virginia on February 8, 1850. On February 28, 1877, he married Willie Jane Northcross (1859-1936) in Montgomery County, Virginia. In 1881, newspapers reported that John W. Barnett of Big Spring shot and mortally wounded his father-in-law, Frederick Thomas Merrit Northcross, during an argument in Montgomery County. Barnett was found guilty of manslaughter and fined $500. John W. Barnett died November 30, 1903, and was buried in James Barnett Cemetery, Montgomery County.
