Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains genealogical information (photocopies only) about the Turner family of Snow Creek (Franklin County), Virginia. The majority of the collection consists of a 51-page collection of records assembled by Helen Turner under the title "The Turners of Snowcreek," containing genealogical research gleanings and charts, together with photocopies of military service records for Josiah Turner (71st Regiment, Virginia Militia) from the War of 1812; Meshach Turner (Company B, 57th Virginia Infantry) and Benjamin Franklin Belcher (Company C, 10th Virginia Cavalry) from the American Civil War (Confederate); and Claude S. Turner (Company A, 314th Machine Gun Battalion) from World War I. The collection also includes photocopies of two letters from Meshach Turner, Company E, 64th Virginia Militia, written in April, 1863. Also included are two pages of pencilled notes on the Meshack Turner line.

Biographical / historical:

Meshack Turner, son of Josiah H. and Drucilla Price Philpott Turner, was born in Henry County, Virginia, on April 29, 1820. On September 1, 1842, he married Sarah Ann "Sally" Deshazo; the couple had seven children. During the American Civil War, he served in Company E, 64th Virginia Militia, and later in Company B, 57th Virginia Infantry. Meshack Turner died in Martinsville (Henry County), Virginia on August 11, 1877, and was buried in Turner Cemetery, Henry County. Among the children of Meshack and Sarah Ann Turner was Larkin Deshazo Turner (1859-1945).

Acquisition information:
The Turner Family Genealogy Papers were donated to Special Collections and University Archives in 1994.
