Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of a single promissory note, signed by Henry Hungerford of Westmoreland County, Virginia, agreeing to pay $877.51 to Stewart Payne. The note was signed on December 10, 1834. Hungerford's signature has been partially removed from the note, suggesting that the debt was satisfied or cancelled. On the reverse are some tallies regarding the debt, signed by Payne.

Biographical / historical:

Henry Hungerford, son of James and Elizabeth Landrum Hungerford, was born at Montross (Westmoreland County), Virginia, on November 15, 1788. The younger Hungerford served as a major in the War of 1812. He married Amelia Spence (1794-1831), and the couple had six children. Following Amelia's death, Hungerford married Mary Ann Spence (1811-1850) in 1834; together they had six children. The 1850 federal census lists Hungerford as a 62-year-old grocer, living in Washington, D. C. with five of his children; the 1860 federal census for Washington describes his occupation as "clerk." Henry Hungerford died at Montross on April 29, 1866, and was buried in Hungerford Cemetery, Leedstown (Westmoreland County).
