Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains records of the literary journal Review. Included in the collection are correspondence, newspaper clippings, working papers, printing plates, and promotional materials. Among the correspondence are letters exchanged with author Samuel Hynes and a typescript draft copy of Hynes' review of The New Wessex Edition of Thomas Hardy.

Biographical / historical:

Founded in 1977 by James Otey Hoge Jr. (1944-2007) and James L. W. West III, both then professors of English at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Review featured scholarly reviews and review essays of works in English and American literature. Published annually, the first issue of the journal appeared in 1979; publication ceased with volume 25 in 2004.

Acquisition information:
The Review Records were donated to Special Collections and University Archives in 1991.
