Background
- Scope and content:
-
This collection contains a bond issued by John Ballenger, a resident of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, to Andrew McMahan, of Amherst County, Virginia. Ballenger promises to pay McMahan a sum of 140 pounds unless he provides McMahan with "a good & Lawful Right To one hundred & sixty Eakers of Land more or less lyind on the Waters of Straitstone [Straightstone Creek, Pittsylvania County]." The bond specifies the boundaries of the tract. Ballinger makes his mark at the bottom of the document, which is also signed by John L. Shackelford, perhaps as witness.
- Biographical / historical:
-
John Ballenger was a resident of Pittsylvania County, Virginia in 1788. This may be the same John Ballinger who married Lithe Lester on March 1, 1789, in Pittsylvania County, and the John Ballanger of Pittsylvania listed as head of a household of eight, including one enslaved person, in the 1820 census.
