Background
- Scope and content:
-
This collection consists of a single account book maintained by Hileman, Cook and Company--and the company's successor, Hileman, Waring and Company-- operators of Callie Iron Furnace in Botetourt County, Virginia, during the late 19th century. The ledger seems to document all of the company's various accounts, including labor, store, and transportation.
- Biographical / historical:
-
Hileman, Cook and Company operated Callie Iron Furnace in Botetourt County, Virginia during the latter 19th century. The company was dissolved on April 1, 1881, when D. S. Cook and Harris Wilton sold their interests in the company to J. B. Hileman, O. T. Waring, E. J. Waring and O. Hileman, who reorganized the company as Hileman, Waring and Company. The new company continued to operate Callie Furnace. Hileman, Waring and Company seems in turn to have been reorganized as the West Iron Gate Land Company in 1890, with Hileman retained as vice-president and general manager.
