Background

Scope and content:

The Montgomery County Historic Sites Survey Records consist of detailed information on hundreds of individual sites cataloged during a 1985 survey of architecturally and/or historically significant buildings in Montgomery County, Virginia. The collection also contains a copy of the survey's final product, a book entitled Montgomery County Historic Sites Survey, which includes an overview of the county's history, a comprehensive register of significant structures and sites, and maps indicating the location of the inventory's sites and structures. (The book contains an index to site numbers, by which survey forms for individual sites may be located.) An oversized folder with maps showing the sites surveyed completes the collection.

Biographical / historical:

During a period of rapid area growth and development in the 1980s, the Montgomery County Planning Commission became aware of the need to preserve local historical and architectural landmarks. The commission applied for and received a matching grant from the Virginia Division of Historic Landmarks to complete a survey and inventory of such sites. The survey--headed by architect and project director Gibson Worsham-- published its results in Montgomery County Historic Sites Survey (1986, two volumes).
