Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of five record books taken from the Blacksburg Post Office, dating July 1914 to April 25, 1922. One volume consists of the Postmaster's Account and Record Book, and the other four volumes are cash books of the International Money Order Office, without individual names.

Biographical / historical:

The Blacksburg Post Office was initially established as "Blacksburgh" on April 9, 1827, changing its name to Blacksburg on April 15, 1893. The post office had many locations around Blacksburg, including the corner of South Main and East Washington Street, the Lancaster house on the west side of Main Street, and for many years located on College Avenue, before the current location on Main Street was constructed in 1935.

Acquisition information:
The Blacksburg Post Office Record Books were donated to Newman Library in November 1973.

The processing, arrangement, and description of the Blacksburg Post Office Record Books was completed in 2004.
