Scope and content:

This collection consists of letters, news clippings, and a historical sketch of the Shell family of Montgomery County, Virginia.

Biographical / historical:

The Shell family moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia in the mid-1700s where they joined other early settlers in Montgomery County. While in Virginia, members of this family survived hostile encounters with Native Americans as well as served in the United States military during the Mexican-American war and World War I.

Acquisition information:
The Shell Family Papers were donated to the Special Collections in 1959 and 2002.
