Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of a single order book maintained by the New River Grocery Company, a wholesale business operating in Fries, Virginia, during the early 20th century. The book contains orders placed by customers and includes lists of items ordered and prices for each. Most of the company's customers were located in in Virginia's Galax, Pulaski, and Wythe counties.

Biographical / historical:

A wholesale grocer, the New River Valley Grocery Company operated in Fries (Grayson County), Virginia during the early 20th century. According to a notation on the first page of the book, the business commenced operation in 1905. It it listed in a directory of Grayson County businesses in 1911. Thomas C. Vaughan (1870-1938) served as the company's president for at least 14 years, beginning in 1906.

Acquisition information:
The New River Grocery Company Order Book was acquired by the university in 1939 or 1940 and transferred to Special Collections and University Archives in 1955.
Processing information:

The processing and description of the New River Grocery Company Order Book commenced and was completed in March 2011. Initial description was completed in or prior to May 1970.
