Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of a single account book maintained by David P. Graham, a Wythe County, Virginia farmer, merchant, and iron furnace owner. The book details accounts of servants and workers in Graham's employ. Debit entries list goods purchased at Graham's store, while on opposite pages, workers are credited for time worked.

Biographical / historical:

David Peirce Graham, the son of David and Martha Peirce Graham, was born in Wythe County, Virginia on October 24, 1838. Graham entered the Virginia Military Institute in 1857, but is said to have departed the following year in protest of a classmate's expulsion. In 1861, Graham organized a company of infantry that became Company B of the 51st Virginia Infantry. The regiment served most of its time in southwestern Virginia and what is now West Virginia. Graham was promoted to major in July 1863, but health concerns forced his resignation in April 1864. Returning home, Graham further developed an iron business established by his father and supplied iron to the Confederate government. In 1868, Graham married Nannie Montgomery Tate (1843-1923), the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Graham Tate. The couple had eight children. David P. Graham died on November 5, 1898.
