General assessment tax settlement of accounts, 1779-1782, are in alphabetical order by county and are housed in one archival box. Accounts list total tax amounts for land, slaves, plate, coin, money, stock and residium, as well as any deductions taken, and balance due from the sheriff. Deductions include payments to tax commissioners, tax assessors, clerks, sheriffs, and for the purchase of items such as paper and ink, as well as for errors and overcharges. The deductions often include the names of the office holders. Several accounts may also include taxes collected for adjacent counties, and often also taxes collected on other items such as carriages, cattle, grain, horses, mills, spirits, tobacco, wheels and windows. Additionally, Buckingham County and Fairfax County aacounts include lists of involvents / delinquents. Includes only counties A-M.

During its session begun in October 1778 the General Assembly passed an act levying a general assessment, or additional tax, on property already subject to tax. In 1780 the General Assembly required commissioners of the revenue to settle their accounts with the auditors of public accounts.
