Biographical / historical:

The Greenwood Memorial Association was established in 1891 to open a cemetery in the eastern part of Richmond, Virginia. The association purchased land in June 1891, but white landowners protested and the city court blocked the cemetery. The association tried again in 1895, purchasing land adjacent to the newly established African American cemetery Evergreen, but it was unable to make payment on the property and returned it to the seller. In 1897, members of Greenwood established the East End Burial Association and succeeded in purchasing the land that Greenwood had to return. They established East End Cemetery.
