Scope and content:

These records are part of Auditor of Public Accounts. Administration of State Government: State-Owned Property - Rental and Exchange of State Property. Each receipt contains the date, the amount received, the name of the person from whom the money was received, and the reason for the payment. The vouchers include the names of persons to whom money was owed, the amounts, and the dates the vouchers were submitted.

Biographical / historical:

By 1848, Alexandre Vattemare of France had established an international program by which the French government exchanged agricultural implements, works of art, and books with other nations. On March 23, 1848, the General Assembly passed a resolution endorsing the program and authorizing the state librarian to exchange books with France. The sum of $250 was appropriated by the General Assembly on April 4, 1848 to defray the cost of participation.
