Background

Scope and content:

Brunswick County (Va.) Public Buildings and Grounds, Bond for jail construction, 1818. This document, written for William T. Pennington and Joseph Kidd, is to ensure that they will complete the construction of a new jail building for Brunswick County and deliver it to the county commissioners on or before October 1819. The bond includes specifications for the proposed structure.

Biographical / historical:

Brunswick County was named for the duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg, one of the German possessions of George I. It was formed in 1720 from Prince George County, but, because of the sparse population, county government was not organized until 1732. In the latter year Brunswick County was enlarged by the addition of parts of Surry and Isle of Wight Counties.
