County Court Records, 1650-1900, consists of Chancery Order Book, Chancery Rules, Clerk's Fee Book, Common Law Process Book, Docket Book, Execution Books, Judgment Docket Book, Minute Books, Order Book with Deeds and Wills, Order Books, Orders, Process Book, and Subpoena Docket and Witness Attendance Book.
Charles City County (Va.) Minute Book, 1830-1837, includes minutes of the Board of Military Exemption, 1862.
Conservation of pages from 1650, 1672-1673, and 1766 record books were partially funded by the Order of Descendants of Colonial Cavaliers through the Library of Virginia Foundation's Adopt Virginia History Program.

Charles City County was named for Charles I of England and was one of the eight shires established in 1634. Its area is 204 square miles, and the county seat is Charles City.
Records have been destroyed at various times. The most damage occurred during the Civil War when the records were strewn through the woods in a rainstorm. A few pre-Civil War volumes such as deed books, will books, minute books, and order books exist.

- These items came to the Library of Virginia in a shipment of court papers from Charles City County. Portions of the collection were transferred under the following accession numbers: 19932, 22638, 22639, 22675, 22709, and 40581.
