Background

Scope and content:

Buchanan County (Va.) Court Records, 1880-1912, consist of a Witness Attendance Book, a Minutes Book, and two boxes of fifas (executions).

This book gives the names of witnesses.

Minutes books contain the clerk's rough notes of court proceedings, which were later transcribed into an order book. Most minute books lack indexes.

Box 128a contains fifas, 1885-1895. Fifas are executions used in Judgment suits.

Box 128b contains Fifas, 1896-1912.

Biographical / historical:

Buchanan County was named for the United States president James Buchanan and was formed from Tazewell and Russell Counties in 1858.
