Scope and content:

Wise (Va.) Capitation Tax Lists record by district for the years 1919, 1936, 1962, and 1964 the names of persons who have paid all state capitation or poll taxes for a particular year. These lists were required to be submitted to the circuit courts and the Auditor of Public Accounts.

Biographical / historical:

Wise County was named for Henry Alexander Wise, governor of Virginia from 1856 to 1860. It was formed in 1856 from Lee, Scott, and Russell Counties.

These records came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer of court papers from Wise County.
