Scope and content:

Buchanan County (Va.) Court Records, 1893-1915, includes a County and Circuit Court Process Book; County and Circuit Court Common Law Executions, Volume 2; and Record of Forfeited Forthcoming Bonds.

Process is any means usded by the court ot acquire or execise jurisdiction over a person or specific property. This volume contains a list of the different processes used by the court.

A forthcoming bond is a bond conditional on the forthcoming property to answer a judgment as may be entered in court. After giving a bond, the property remains in the posession of the debtor.

Common Law Executions, Volume 2, contains a record executions issued in Common Law Court.

Biographical / historical:

Buchanan County was named for the United States president James Buchanan and was formed from Tazewell and Russell Counties in 1858.

Records were destroyed by fire in 1885; records created after that date suffered extreme damage in a flood in 1977.
