Norfolk County (Va.) Records, 1740-1899 (bulk 1800-1899), consist predominantly of Judgments, Road and Bridge Records, and Land Records. Road and Bridge records include plats. The collection also includes Wills, Overseers of the Poor Records, Bonds, Commisions, and Oaths, School Records, Military and Pension Records, Organization Records, Tax and Fiscal Records, Fiduciary Records, and Miscellaneous Records - an eighteenth century broadside advertising the play Hamlet.

Biographical / historical:

Norfolk County was created in 1691 when Lower Norfolk County was divided into Norfolk County and Princess Anne County. Norfolk County became extinct on 1 January 1963, when it was consolidated with the city of South Norfolk to form the city of Chesapeake. The county seat was Portsmouth.

This collection came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer of records from the circuit court of Chesapeake.
