Monroe County (West) Virginia Court Record, undated. The item is an envelope that was removed from Monroe County court records. It is addressed to Lewis Thomas, Indian Creek Post Office, Monroe County, with a South Hanover, Indiana, postmark.

Biographical / historical:

Monroe County (West) Virginia was named in honor of James Monroe, fifth president of the United States. It was formed in 1799 from Greenbrier County, and in 1802 part of Botetourt was added. It joined other western Virginia counties to form the state of West Virginia in 1863.

This record was replevined by the Library of Virginia following the trial entitled Commonwealth of Virginia vs. Larry I. Vass heard in Henrico County Circuit Court in November 1972.
