Background

Scope and content:

King and Queen County (Va.) Court Record, John Ryland's Affidavit of List of Property Lost in the War, February 1865. Consists of an affidavit from John Ryland and a deposition from James Haynes documenting Ryland's claim against the U.S. army for property taken from him in 1863 and 1864, including three slaves who deserted his plantation for General Sheridan's army.

Biographical / historical:

King and Queen County was formed in 1691 from New Kent County.

Records were lost in courthouse fires in 1828 and 1833. Records were again destroyed by a courthouse fire set by Union troops on 10 March 1864 during the Civil War.

An act passed by the General assembly on 1866 January 20 required clerks of counties and corporations to keep record of property lost during the Civil War including enslaved people who were emancipated. Clerks were to record this information in a book kept for that purpose and the original papers stored in a safe place.
