Background

Scope and content:

Ledger A, 1869-1871, and Ledger B, 1870-1872, of Bryan and Company, a general store. They record the individual accounts of customers. Each account lists transactions in chronological order, items purchased, quantity of items purchased, cost per item, amount owed, and amount paid. Items sold include dry-goods, tools, spices, washboards, lamp chimneys, soda, scissors, and biscuit cutters. Forms of payments include cash, credit, labor, and barter of items such as wood, butter, eggs, and bacon. Both volumes include an index that lists in alphabetical order the names of customers and the page numbers where their accounts can be found.

Biographical / historical:

Bryan and Company was a general store owned by James E. Bryan that conducted business in Rockbridge County, Virginia during the mid-nineteenth century.
