Background

Scope and content:

Legislative petition of the citizens of Brooke County asking for a law allowing a free mulatto woman, the nurse to the wife of Presbyterian Minister R.M. White, to remain in the Commonwealth. Includes letter from White.

Biographical / historical:

Petitions to the General Assembly were the primary catalyst for legislation in the Commonwealth from 1776 until 1865.
