Scope and content:

Ledger, 1770-1860, of the Walker family of King and Queen County, Virginia, consisting of accounts and estate accounts kept by Baylor Walker (1737-1773), Humphrey Walker, (1762-1820), and John Walker, with an index. Also contains the diary of John Walker (1785-1867) discussing farming at the family home, Locust Grove. The spine of the volume reads "Baylor Walker Ledger, 1770-1860."

Biographical / historical:

Baylor Walker was born 28 January 1737 in King and Queen County, Virginia. A prominent local citizen, he owned a mill. Baylor Walker died 7 April 1773. His son, Humphrey Walker, was born 13 January 1762 in King and Queen County. In 1796 he was appointed as captain in the militia. In 1799, he became a justice on the county court. Humphrey Walker was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1809 and served, with one interruption (1816-1819) until 1820., He died 26 December 1820. His son John Walker was born 15 August 1785 in King and Queen County. Although he inherited the family home, Locust Grove, John Walker lived at Chatham Hill, which he inherited from his mother, and managed Locust Grove from there. John Walker died 27 February 1867.
