Biographical / Historical

West Virginia University opened as the West Virginia Agricultural College in 1867. Despite its name, the College offered a breadth of courses, and was renamed "West Virginia University" in 1868 to reflect this diversity. After the renaming, the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer Sciences was formed as a distinct academic unit within the university. Over its more than 150 years of operation, the College has fostered the study and care of West Virginia's agricultural resources. Through its research and educational opportunities, the College's programming created innovations such as the blight-resistant tomato, cattle embryo transplantation, and the cataloguing of West Virginia insects. Other projects include the dairy plant, which produced ice cream that was served to the community from the mid-twentieth century until 2004, and the Allegheny Highlands Project, which connected College researchers with farmers across the state. The College also participated in a collaborative project to assist the development of higher education agricultural facilities in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. In 2001, it was renamed the "Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer Sciences" in honor of the sisters Gladys Gwendolyn Davis and Vivian Davis Michael after their $18.4 million donation, $16.2 million of which went to the College.

The Dorsey Resource Center was opened at the Jackson Mill Extension in Weston in 1978. Named after C.P. Dorsey, who was involved in West Virginia's 4-H program, this building housed the 4-H museum, library, and resource center. The materials at this location were loaned out to WVU extension personnel across the state. In recent years, the library was removed to make space for more meeting space.

For sources and more information, see:

Slides from the old Agricultural Science Building. Some of the presentations came from the Dorsey Resource Center, built at the Jackson's Mill Extension in 1978. Slides include informational presentations about various topics, primarily either educational materials or College programming. Educational materials are primarily presentations on the proper use and maintenance of various equipment, agricultural techniques, and laws/protocols. Slides on College programming and groups are largely unidentified, but include Programming in the Village of P, and the FFA (Future Farmers of America). There may also be some materials from the home economics program, such as a presentation titled "Home Safety: Home Design and Decoration." Slide presentations 6, 9, 12, 16, 17, 23, and 24 have an accompanying cassette, presentations 6, 12, 14, 16, 17, 25, 26, and 32 have papers (primarily scripts, but some include other informational materials), and presentation 25 has a film.
 </scopecontent>
