<p>Mountaineer Field stadium opened 27 September 1924 on the campus of West Virginia University with a 21-6 win against West Virginia Wesleyan College. It had a seating capacity of 38,000 by the time it closed in 1979. It was razed in 1987. The old site currently features the Life Sciences building in the area of the north stands, and the Business and Economics building in the south; the gridiron is now an open field between the two buildings. In 2005 a horseshoe-shaped monument was erected at the southwestern corner of the site to memorialize the old stadium.</p> </bioghist>
