Biographical / Historical

Hugh Parrill was born in Hampshire County, Virginia circa 1811. He resided at Parrill Hollow, near Ridgeville, (West) Virginia. Parrill married Lucy Cundiff on 15 October 1833. The couple had nine children, at least seven of whom are known to have survived into adulthood. Two of Parrill's sons, James A. and William H., fought for the Confederacy, serving in the 7th Virginia Cavalry.

Although his occupation is listed in census records as a farmer, Parrill is known to have served as a judge for many years. He also served as deputy sheriff of Hampshire County circa 1852-1856. The part of Hampshire County where Parrill lived became part of Mineral County 1866; thus, he served in both counties at different times.

Parrill died 4 June 1898.
 </bioghist>

Receipts for business of the Hampshire County Court, ca. 1852-1857 collected by Hugh Parrill, Deputy Sheriff. They were stored in a cloth filing system designed and used by Parrill. The receipts, on small slips of paper, document monies collected by the Court for taxes and other transactions involving court cases, land and other property, and the local militia.

The cloth that the filing system is made out of is a piece of linen fabric 14 in. by 34 in. onto which 24 pockets were sewn. The pockets were marked in ink with a letter of the alphabet or other label. Also inked onto the cloth are Parrill's name and the date 30 November 1854. Receipts were stored in the pockets by surname. Parrill is believed to have carried the filing system with him whenever he traveled on official business. The cloth can be folded several times to become sized for convenient carrying. All documents have been removed from the pockets and placed into folders.

For information concerning Hugh Parrill, please see the historical note.
 </scopecontent>
