Ellis Mayo (Mayho) was the son of Hannah Mayo (Mayho), a former slave owned by Randal McGavock of Wythe County, Virginia. Hannah was the daughter of former slaves Thevis Mayho (owned by Robert Sayers Jr.) and Matilda Crosby (owned by Randal McGavock). According to the 1880 Wythe County census, Ellis Mayo (Mayho), age 11, lived with his mother Hannah Mayo (Mayho), age 33. on Main Street in Wytheville. Hannah was a domestic servant and was single; listed with her were son Willie Lee, age 7; son Lemon, age 4, and daughter Martha, age 10 months.

In the 1910 Wythe County census, Ellis Mayo is listed as living on Calhoun Street, Wytheville, Virginia. He worked as a railroad laborer and his wife, Annie Mayo, worked as a laundress. Their son Robert Mayo (Mayho), age 19, worked as a waiter at a hotel. In the 1920 census, Annie Mayo (Mayho) is listed as living on Jefferson Street, Wytheville, Virginia and is widowed, working as a cook for a private family. From the census information, Ellis Mayho (Mayho) was born circa 1869 and Annie Mayo (Mayho) was born circa 1866-1869; they probably married circa 1885.
